10MUS

Year 10 Music

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr M. Buick.

This course offers a range of musical experiences, linked to aspects of the Level 1 NCEA Music programme.  Students will have the opportunity to extend their performance skills, reinforce theory skills, explore composition and music technologies, examine music from a wide range of musical eras, and develop aural skills.

Students are encouraged to learn an instrument, and are prioritized in the Itinerant Music Scheme.

The course begins with an overview of Music History, then takes an in depth focus on Music Analysis, before rounding out with an extended look at Music Technology.

The development of skills over time is valuable in many industries, and while being a musician may not be your career goal, having passion and long term drive to succeed at a goal makes Music a subject that is sought after in a wide variety of professional careers.

This course is the recommended pathway towards NCEA Level 1 Music.

Disclaimer

Southland Boys' High School endeavours to timetable courses depending on students' needs, interests and future plans.  Many factors can influence whether a course is able to be offered in the following year.  These can include:

  • Student demand
  • Staff availability
  • Resourcing

These factors can also impact on timetabling, and as a result students will be asked for input about any clashes that may occur.

Where a course is not able to be run, students' back-up subjects will be used.  If there are issues with student selections and the timetabling process, students will have the opportunity to make a decision in conjunction with staff input on the best solution.
