L3ODE

NCEA Level 3 Outdoor Education

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr C. Mason.

In Level 3 ODE, students build and extend on the skills they learnt in Year 12 such as safety management in the outdoors and effective planning in the outdoors.   The outdoor tasks are demanding and will need a high level of fitness and commitment.

Being a Leader and taking a leadership role at the Year 7 Borland Camp will be a requirement.

Numbers are limited for this course due to the logistics and ratios needed for Outdoor Activities.

Students will need to be aware that the majority of assessment is theory based planning work in the classroom, as well as time away from school attending outdoor excursions.

Health & Safety in isolated environments is a priority in this course.   Students with exemplarity pastoral records may have priority in being chosen for this course.

There will be a cost associated with this course.

Recommended Prior Learning

Students will have experience in outdoor activities and safety management from Year 12 Outdoor Education.

Students need to have passed Year 12 ODE (15 credits at level 2 in either ODE or PED) in order to be accepted in this course - this allows them to have the understanding needed to be successful in Level 3 ODE.

Students will have an exemplary pastoral record in Year 12.

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

Course costs are substantial as travel, accommodation, equipment hire, outdoor guide hire, and equipment costs are necessary for certain excursions.outdoor education

Assessment Information

Assessments are in written form for all except the performance standard (91501). This will involve completing any pre trip planning in booklets, participating in the outdoor activity and then completing a written assessment, reflecting on the outdoor activity. The performance standard is purely practical, this involves practicing and completing an activity to the best of one's ability, and subsequently a grade will be awarded based on performance results.

Disclaimer

Southland Boys' High School endeavours to timetable courses depending on students' needs, interests and future plans.  Many factors can influence whether a course is able to be offered in the following year.  These can include:

  • Student demand
  • Staff availability
  • Resourcing

These factors can also impact on timetabling, and as a result students will be asked for input about any clashes that may occur.

Where a course is not able to be run, students' back-up subjects will be used.  If there are issues with student selections and the timetabling process, students will have the opportunity to make a decision in conjunction with staff input on the best solution.
