NCEA Level 3 Physics
Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Mr I. Welsh.
Level 3 Physics is aimed at students intending to take up a career in Physical Sciences. It provides a pathway for study at university.
This is a comprehensive course focusing on Waves, Mechanics and Electricity/Electromagnetism.
It is a pre-requisite for many Science-based careers, as well as professional Engineering.
Recommended Prior Learning
Entry Criteria
For entry into L3 Physics the student will have achieved in at least 13 credits at NCEA Level 2 Physics. The following 10 credits must be included in these 13 credits - passed at least at Achieved level.
Internal
Achieved (or better) in AS 91168 (Physics 2.1) Carry out a practical physics investigation that leads to a non-linear mathematical relationship (4 credits).
External
Achieved (or better) in AS 91171 (Physics 2.4) Demonstrate understanding of mechanics (6 credits),
OR
Achieved (or better) in AS 91173 (Physics 2.6) Demonstrate understanding of electricity and electromagnetism (6 credits).
Contributions and Equipment/Stationery
• 1 x lined refill
• 1 x 14K8 Graph paper
• 1 x Lever-arch ring binder
• Pens and pencils
• 1 x Clear plastic ruler
• Scientific Calculator would be an advantage, but not essential.
Assessment Information
Achievement Standard 91522 will be assessed by way of an open-book, research-based, report.Achievement Standard 91521 will be assessed by way of an experiment involving working in pairs for data collection followed by individual analysis and reporting of findings.
Achievement Standard 91525 will be assessed by way of closed-book testing and will have a reassessment opportunity.
Achievement Standards 91523 and 91524 are External Standards assessed in November by way of exam.
Students can request entry for Scholarship Physics and will be given access to resources to follow a (largely) self-taught programme.

Disclaimer
Southland Boys' High School endeavours to timetable courses depending on students' needs, interests and future plans. Many factors can influence whether a course is able to be offered in the following year. These can include:
- Student demand
- Staff availability
- Resourcing
These factors can also impact on timetabling, and as a result students will be asked for input about any clashes that may occur.
Where a course is not able to be run, students' back-up subjects will be used. If there are issues with student selections and the timetabling process, students will have the opportunity to make a decision in conjunction with staff input on the best solution.
