Course Description

Recommended Prior Learning

It is recommended that students have successfully completed Level 1 te reo Māori to gain entry into this Level 2 class.as we will be building on the language skills learned in previous years.  However, entry into this course may be granted following a meeting with Whaea Francine in which she can assess your skills and intentions for learning.


This is course is focused on te reo Māori and level 2 NCEA language skills incorporating reading, writing, listening and speaking. Topics will focus on issues concerning te ao Māori including revitalisation of te reo Māori (te whakaora reo), conservation (kaitiakitanga) and opening an understanding of Māori philosophy (ngā Atua).  There will also being links to language used in the Te Ao Haka curriculum.

In addition to the NCEA curriculum, we will continue to deepen tauira understanding of tikanga Māori through practices of karakia, whanaungatanga (brotherhood) me whakaute (respect) in class processes and protocols.

Assessment Information

The internal assessments will be assessed on the following timeline: Term 1 - 91288 Tuhinga/Writing, Term 2 - 91285 Kōrero/Speaking, Term 3 - 91284 - Whakarongo/Listening. Also in term 3 91286 & 91287 sees preparation for mock/derived grade exams.
