Course Description

The Year 9 Social Studies course covers a variety of topics that examine New Zealand society historically and in the present. Some of the topics also look at societies around the world and how they can be different to New Zealand. 

Topics include: ‘Kiwi as Bro’ - an examination of the waves of different groups of migrants to New Zealand with a focus on their impact on the Southland region; “Treaty then and Now” – an examination of different viewpoints on the Treaty of Waitangi and the events that resulted as a consequence of these differences. Contexts are both historic and in the present; “Money Matters’ – A unit that examines how the economy impacts society. Students will learn about the history of money, global trade, and the role of entrepreneurs in developing innovations; and, “20th Century Events” – A topic which will look at a number of historic events in the 20th Century that have impacted society in the present. Topics may include Nazi Germany, the Cold War, and 9/11. The teacher may vary case studies for each topic depending on student interests.
